The President of Georgia opened a new public school in Melaani

Mikheil Saakashvili opened a newly-built public school in the village of Melaani today. The President of Georgia toured the classrooms and attended an English language class, and talked with the foreign instructors, who are teaching children the English language within the scope of the program "Teach and learn with Georgia." The President of Georgia talked with the first graders as well and expressed his interest in how the children are using the Netbooks he gave them. The President rewarded the three top tenth-graders with portable computers and noted that such technologies should be produced locally in the future.

"You have to produce new computers when you grow up. Computers are currently assembled with parts that are manufacturedabroad. But we have to produce them ourselves in the future and provide the rest of the world with computers" - noted Mikheil Saakashvili.

Mikheil Saakashvili also visited the new natural science lab which was installed within the scope of the program "Einstein" at the Melaani School. The President of Georgia personally tested the technologies created by local students.

"What was done here is very important for the local population. Two weeks ago, in Kakheti I met with the students who received the top scores in the national exams. The fact that all of them chose technical professions is very important. It also should be noted that 8 out of 10 of those students are boys. Girls usually have better academic results than boys. The success of male college applicants means that they are no longer wasting time standing in the streets anymore. In the past, most boys were lazy; they lacked discipline and stood in the street because education was considered shameful. Fortunately, everything has changed. Interest towards technical subjects has grown and at the same time, schools equipped with modern technologies are being opened. All of this will improve educational reform even more" - stated Mikheil Saakashvili.

The Melaani School, which is in compliance with international standards, is designed to accommodate 200 students. Currently 160 students are enrolled and 28 instructors employed. The school has well-equipped natural science and computer labs, civil defense and security classrooms, as well as a library.

After touring the school, Mikheil Saakashvili met with the local population, standing outside the school, waiting for the President.

"It fills me up with great energy when I see renovated and well equipped classrooms and smart children with bright eyes. If you provide children with computers, teach them English and create the same conditions for them as the children their age have in all developed countries of the world, the psychology will change. A child who has been brought up in such conditions will never be humiliated for being uneducated, and that child will never live in poverty, they will find an independent way and will soon support the family" - noted Mikheil Saakashvili.

The local population thanked the President for the permanent gas supply and the new water system. However the current road, which was named as a major problem, will be taken care of very soon, according to Mikheil Saakashvili.
