President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili held a National Security Council session

6/11/2009

President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili held a National Security Council session in the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. On June 15 at the Session of UN Security Council it is planned to discuss the issue of extension of UN mission in Georgia. The Security Council Session today was fully dedicated to the discussion of the UN mandate.

As President stated he was very disappointed by the UN General Secretary's report, which practically was submitted to Russia's blackmail.

Mikheil Saakashvili noted that Georgia's aim is to maintain international missions, but if Russia considers as a necessary requirement the compromise on the territorial integrity, I want to say this will not happen, because Georgia will make no compromises regarding Georgia's territorial integrity. President of Georgia said that Georgia held intensive consultations with permanent members of the UN Security Council and that he doesn't remember such support since 1993. They were actively involved in the preparation process of the resolution for the session.

"The representatives of Russia who have the right of the veto demand from Georgia certain compromises on reflecting Georgia's territorial integrity adequately for the price of maintaining the UN mission.

We have a bitter experience of signing the Moscow agreement of 1994 and of those compromises that the former President made.

In spite of non-effectiveness of these mechanisms we are interested in maintaining international organizations here, in this case, the UN mission in the conflict zone. This is not an internal Georgian conflict, this is Russia-Georgia's conflict zone.

If Russia offers international community as a necessary condition the compromises on Georgia's territorial integrity no matter what is our will to maintain UN mission in Georgia we won't make compromises on the territorial integrity of our country. This is our firm position. There should be a resolution that will confirm territorial integrity of Georgia.

We are not going to trade anyhow on price of our country. We have informed the representative of the US administration who visited Georgia recently on this issue.

Russia shows full inflexibility and doesn't agree with anything, hoping that we will submit to blackmail and will follow their provocations.

Georgian government will make no compromises. No one can have any doubts.

We will defend our legal principles, territorial integrity and continue diplomatic struggle for the de-occupation of Georgia. This is a common position of the UN council. Either there should be a resolution that will exactly depict that every single square meter of Abkhazian land belongs to Georgia, will confirm full respect of Georgia's territorial integrity or it's technical extension will confirm all former resolutions. The third is practically excluded. We aren't going to make it a subject of trade for the price of our values", stated President of Georgia.

Mikheil Saakashvili once again called the parliamentary and non-parliamentary opposition to take part in the work of the NSC of Georgia.

Mikheil Saakashvili stated that he is going to invite President's Advisory Board after the resolution is adopted and discuss issues regarding Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

President once again called all political groups to work for common Georgian interests. He said that the doors of the NSC are open for everybody and the politicians have to fix their positions where these decisions are made.
